Other Side of the Looking Glass

Saw this article from the blog Yawning Bread, titled "Keeping Singapore safe for families". Its interesting, in light of the massage parlour sleaze invading the heart land.

Personally I feel that the oldest "profession" in human history should have been eradicated by this time and age. But who am I kidding when the majority of the people, especially the weaker sex are living below their country's bench-mark poverty line.

I suppose, this being a supply and demand conundrum, both sides of the equation must share the blame, with my sex taking 60 % of it due to the way history turned out.

The solution to this problem is to break the supply and demand equation. Sounds simple but it is obviously not. The current directive of just catching everybody involved is only just treating the symptom but not the disease.

Broadly speaking, there are 3 main ways to eradicate this "profession".

Ensure Survival.

Women or men will do anything to ensure their own survival and that of their children. Naively and hopefully, i would like to think that, given a chance, no women would want to be associated with this industry. Sadly, not many destituted people have a choice.

Each government are supposedly there to serve their citizens and improve the lot of their nation. Sadly, not every government remembers this primary task when self interest overrides national interest.

Organised Crime.

This is actually the main driver of the whole industry. Majority of the girls are either duped or forced into this industry. Organised Crime provides the avenues for these transactions to occur. This in turn becomes linked to other crimes like drugs and human traffic smuggling.

All countries should try to eradicate organised crime as much as possible to prevent the exploitation of women. However organised crime is still in turn linked back to poverty.

Education.

Providing education for the women helps them to get a better life (hopefully) and also to know their options and rights so as to make the right decisions. Men must also be educated to reach into their conscience after acknowledging the pitiful plight of the women servicing their needs.

Of course, this is only my simple and humble opinion. Whether things will really work out the way it is supposed to do, we will never know.

After all, how many people are there that really cares for the world and humanity. Can poverty ever be minimized or removed?

i read abt e massage parlour thing. as w all things in sg, everything ends up getting regulated and the legitimate ones suffer.

sometimes i wonder if it's realli out of desperation tt drive women to selling their bodies or otherwise.

was watching CSI where brass' daughter is a pros. i somehow think tt she chose it herself, rather than be pushed into it for survival.

hmm. dunno. my comment has no conclusion =p

First thing first, for the majority that forced into this industry, action must be taken to give them an option to leave or stay. Majority of the people in this industry probably have limited career choices with their low education and limited amount of information available to them.

Also, for the materialistic who voluntarily took this path, they usually choose to turn a blind eye to the dark elements associated with this line of work. i.e. social stigma, violence, drugs, diseases, organized crime etc, that is until they encountered it. This is where education (academic or moral) and information come into the picture for these people to make informed choices.

But in the end, we can’t stop people from self-destructing when they made their own informed choice.

One thing that I’m quite sure is that, at the end of the day, no one is really proud to be in this industry. No mothers will tell their children that they were prostitutes and still be proud of it. Most of them, at their death beds, would definitely regret this career choice, no matter how brief it was.

Sad to say…. Repercussion from Life’s mistake always has its own way of catching up. You can run but you can’t hide. Society has never really been forgiving...
