Spring cleaning of the Mind

My fellow colleagues, being women, started cleaning our tables. Although i commented that we will be relocated to another part of the office, she said its tradition to clean the dust and dirt away before CNY, aka Spring-cleaning.

The word dust reminded me of this story about Hui Neng, the 6th Patriarch.

One day the Fifth Patriarch told his monks to express their wisdom in a poem. Whoever had true realization of his original nature (Buddha Nature) would be ordained the Sixth Patriarch.

The head monk, Shen Hsiu, was the most learned, and wrote the following:

The body is the wisdom-tree,
The mind is a bright mirror in a stand;
Take care to wipe it all the time,
And allow no dust to cling.

"身是菩提树,心如明镜台。时时勤拂拭, 勿使惹尘埃。"

The poem was praised by other monks, but The Fifth Patriarch knew that Shen Hsiu had not yet found his original nature.

On the other hand, Hui Neng couldn't even write, so someone had to write down his poem, which read:

Fundamentally no wisdom-tree exists,
Nor the stand of a mirror bright.
Since all is empty from the beginning,
Where can the dust alight

"菩提本无树,明镜亦非台。本来无一物,何处惹尘埃。"

The Fifth Patriarch pretended that he wasn't impressed with this poem either, but in the middle of the night he summoned Hui Neng. The Fifth Patriarch gave him the insignia of his office, the Patriarch's robe and bowl. Hui Neng was told to leave for the South and to hide his enlightenment and understanding until the proper time arrives for him to propagate the Dharma.

Tainted with Hope

Thursday. Met up with Daren Y, Terrence, Jos, Albert and Lips for dinner at Raffles City Cartel. As usual, there’s a long queue but we waited for the long queue to disperse slightly before sending the one who dun have to work to join the queue. Basically everyone, including myself is late. Order 6 person seafood platter and an insane amount of deserts, courtesy of Albert who complained there’s no good dessert especially cheese cake in Shanghai.

Waited for the elusive K.Hon to appear but by the time he’s on the road, we are ready to split. Albert and Lips had a Majong session at Serangoon, Terrence had a pool appointment at Paradiz Centre where I long-pang him to, Darren Y just wanna go home and sleep.

And yes, Today is CNY eve. And I’m still at my work place typing this. Chey…

Regardless of NYE or CNY, or any other public holidays, its all really about celebrating hope. But for someone who dun like his existence, Hope is the hardest taint to wash away. Somehow I guess its inbuilt in all human beings. Having hope means having desires, having attachments to life and thus to oneself. Hope tends to cloud your mind from doing what is necessary at the moment. It is, more often than not, a useful weapon used to entice or entrap people in their own misery as it is a type of self-delusion, a sweet poison that can do its job well.

So go away Hope. May I never have hope again. Hahaha…. What a paradox.

The pleasure is all mine

*The names have been changed so that the parties are protected. Somehow lah.*

Some time ago, J heard the news of a classmate (N) getting together with another uni school mate (B). So far J had been too lazy to further verify it.

The weekend was supposed to be a good time to verify this matter as J was supposed to meet N and their common gang for dinner. Sadly, N left when J came. J sounded out the remaining gang discreetly without alert them but apparently no one had any whiff of the news.

Opportunity came in the form of a present that J was supposed to pass to N on behalf of a friend. So J made use of this opening and made a special but a bit out of the way trip down central west to satisfy his curiosity aka just bor liao.

Unexpectedly J met B when he was parking his car. B was on his way to buy some stuff and of course J offered B a ride home as both live in the same area (this is so that J can do some discreet probing later" But B mumbled about buying stuff first, meeting up later and hurried off. This is not surprising as B and N are colleagues, which meant that they could have shared info. But this is not a conclusive clue. Yet.

So J met up with N as planned initially. While J was slowly easing N into her comfort zone by chatting about the usual stuff, J can’t help but notice N was off and on doing smsing at her hp. And then N suddenly commented B will be joining them later as he is in a queue now. (Closer than usual coordination between 2 colleagues can be expected, normally, and hence hardly a good clue.) Then J further noticed that N was constantly on a look-out for B as “he should be passing by this direction”, N commented. Hmm…

Running through his mind, J decided to cut it close by giving N a sly side glance and said suddenly : “B 的人很不错 hor”.

N instinctively blinked. A slight smile appeared. Then N mumbled something that J couldn’t really catch. But at the sight of that smile, J knew. With the rabbit firmly in his net, J chose to completely change the topic. This tactic was to confuse N who will be mulling about if J had knew of this budding romance and also to give N a chance to declare it first (Hahaha yeah right). N held her tongue, and to the J’s dismay, N’s white knight came cruising to her rescue unknowingly before J can go in for the kill.

As N is safe with her white knight, J knew that exposing them right there would kill his thrill prematurely. So 将计就计,J steer the conversation to his own work related matters to disarm N so that J can continue his fun later with B as J is sure that N wouldn’t suddenly confess or do anything that would spoilt their “just friends cum colleagues” façade in front of J. J can only deduct that N and B had agreed to continue keep J in the dark with or without prior consensus among themselves.

Soon N had to meet a colleague to take a taxi home. Saying their farewells, J and B embarked on their way home. Around half way home, J used the same tactic on B i.e “N的人其实很不错hor”.

Living up to J’s knowledge of B as a straight forward person, B admitted his budding romance which started just a few months ago, albeit after a stunned silence. Using this as an inroad, J managed to get more info by acting pleasantly surprised. Anyway Men’s talk is also sacred and hence not reproduced here.

Why this is interesting is that N just broke up with E less than half a year ago, citing personality issues. E happens to be J’s friend too, although not so close to J. E and B had been together since around 5 or 6 years ago while B and N was colleagues currently less than 2 years ago and had gotten together a few months ago. It would look suspicious to most but J would prefer to give B the benefit of a doubt as in any relationship, there is no right and wrong. Things happen, people change.

Then it occurred to J. Is there an accepted waiting period for people who just broke up to find a new love interest before people would label him negatively? So far in his survey, there is no conclusive societal standard period but then no matter what, some people would think otherwise.

An Epilogue

Reproduced below is SMS exchange between J and N where J decided to have some fun when he got home.

J : “hee. For whats its worth, I wouldn’t tell our gang until you announced it yourself. Cheers”

N : “You should just ask me the direct question. So you know before you ask B?”

J : “Heard about it some while ago but was surprise that our gang din know last weekend. So today is a good chance to test you both. At least B is more honest than u. ha”

N : “You din ask me the right qn :) so I just answer your indirect one. He always more honest than me. No need to hide thou but also no need to announce to everybody”

J : “Yes yes… I get your meaning. No Fret, ;) I think you both are perfect together though. Good night, hee hee… =) ”

N : “Thanks. Wish you and XXX well too :)”

J : “Ha ha… Yeah right… Dun change the topic. =) you are the focus leh :) if you dun trust me, I think you shd trust XXX who is more honest than u. wahaha…”

N : “Where you think until. Only wish you well, din say u r successful :) good luck. ”

J : “Yeah right… Got bf liao, so can get cheeky right… ok ok… Give B face, let you win. =)”

N : “B says thank you for giving him face. Thank you also for delivering the gift. Night :)”

J : “Ha ha… help me say good night to B too. Btw your work place is not really on my way ;) night.”

N : “Ok. One soon not to be secret confirmation trade for a free ride home and free delivery think quite worth it lah :)”

J : “The pleasure is all mine. Wahaha… =)”

The end? Wahahaha....

P.S: if anyone reading knew who i'm talking about, kindly dun confront the new couple directly please. and of course dun mention me as the source. Cheers.

Karaoke - What to sing ?

My boss gave me the secret signal to be released early last Saturday. Drove down to find some friends at new bridge road before proceeding to Orchard Shaw towers. Had dinner at Wisma Ichiban, a jap food restaurant. Waited for a good half hour before getting a table.

After which, we proceeded to Orchard Party World for a 5 hours karaoke session…. As usual, dunno really know much some to sing, so I sang back my “old” songs. It has been some time since I used a mic.

The following is my usual hit list :

温柔- 五月天
纯真-五月天
断点-张敬轩
我不该看你的眼神- 苏芮
从开始到现在- 张信哲
Piano –
most of 许茹芸’s song

eh… I guess these are most of them that I can remember off hand… enough for 1 session of karaoke I suppose but then i'm not really a karaoke kind of person. The whole point was just to get together with friends anyway.

Still, I guess its also time that I learn some more popular and modern ones… The first step would be getting myself a radio receiver cum mp3 player first… which sadly is not feasible coz I’m broke most of the time… and the local internet radio just lag too much. hmm...

Cow crazy

Beef beef beef !!!

Monday night. Had the best beef that I have ever tasted in a long long time at the Mozzaic Restaurant located at Club Street. Caught up with a secondary school friend last night who suggested this fine dinning restaurant.

But back to the beef, it was done in medium-rare and extremely succulent and… Ok ok… I’m not exactly a food critic. But for what it’s worth, I was almost in beef heaven chewing on that heavenly meat, sucking the essence…

Should always order their Brazilian churrasco coz its unlimited portion at $38++ with a rotation of seven types of meat that are slow-cooked in the roasting pit, this dish is one of Mozzaic specialties. There’s also the grilled pineapple which was a nice way to end the barrage of meat piled onto your plate.

Yummy!!! (ok... the picture doesn't do it justice... but heck!!)

It takes 2 hands to clap

Wednesday. Suffered internal injures while taking off my shirt. Maybe did it too fast and too strenuously. Now my chest hurt whenever I stretch…. Hahaha

Thursday. Met up with my salsa grp at a thai restaurant at Far East for dinner before moving on to Hard Rock Café. There’s a salsa night there on the first Thursday of the month. Tried my legs at Salsa after half a year break. Kanna sai. Return everything back to the instructor liao. Got further updated on the scandals on the dance floor during my absence. Later, my friends went over to Union Square first coz I was appointed to pick someone up. Took the opportunity to browse around Borders coz I parked there. ($3 per entry after 6pm on weekdays.) An hour of browsing passed before I was notified to just get my legs down to the dance floor, irregardless. Got myself an easy reading book to jump start the storybook worm in me. Saw many new faces at Union, besides the hardcore “ 老教”. 长江后浪推前浪,长浪死在沙滩上。Eventually got back some of the Latino groove, albeit a shaky one.

The lesson learnt today is as per the title. Some of the girls got dumped by their ex-bfs who are unfortunately in the clinch as my usual salsa group. The girls venting their woes, while the guys are either hiding or putting up an uncomfortable front with their new found squeeze (whom, sadly, was there that night). Shit, been missing all this scandals during my absence. Hahaha

That’s the thing when relationships go bad, and they try to remain “friends”, most people can’t really be that 潇洒 and have a clean break. The bad will/feelings carry over into this new status between the ex-couples and things just become awkward. Both camps have their own reasons and an outsider can only do so much while ping-ponging between the 2 camps.

In any relationships, it takes 2 hands to clap. All the forever-love promises and sweet-nothings can’t really be taken seriously. I mean everyone makes promises everyday but not many people can really keep most of them and the recipients also dun normally expect the others to keep theirs. Or maybe its just me?? I have never expect people to keep any of their promises or vows but if they do, its only a bonus. All the declarations of love are true and heart-felt at that point of conception but the recipients always forget that people and circumstances can change all too randomly and suddenly.

People always like to quote “ 不在乎天长地久,只在乎曾经拥有。” but not many people can understand what it truly entail.

Friday. The sky finally stopped crying. Which was good coz I got a wedding to attend. Saw many of my long lost secondary school mates. Hopefully can catch up with them some time soon. Hmm… and all the girls got married. I suppose it’s about that time liao… for the girls.

Anyway, my wallet seriously doesn’t have any cash left after the red bomb. Sianz. Got to go draw whatever is left in my pitifully bank. Think I should have some coins left in the drawer some where….

Going to hide at home over the weekend…

Wednesday, January 11, 2006

Eh, She did it again.

It’s a week of torrential h2o over the red dot here. Started since last weekend and increased in intensity over this week. Think the businesses at Chinatown must be screaming their heads off... looks we will be having a wet wet CNY...

Met LL on Monday coz I have ignored her during last festive session. Besides the ususal whining, she got me along as her bodyguard against her “fly” that she had attracted over the New Year eve. Seems like a nice chap though even if I was not in the entertaining mood on Monday. From Shanghai and is currently a photographer at some Orchard photo gallery.

Witness the art of “playing dumb”, usually done by women against men that they are just twirling with. A no-brainer approach by agreeing with everything that other party spits out and justifying the other party’s view. This creates the illusion of bonding of people with the same frequency. The only side effect is that the other party will probably want to get together more often with you which is obviously not the desired effects sometimes. As a regular cock-teaser, I suppose she will hold it well against men. Still, this behavior can be irritating when one is not in the mood for bullshitting. Anyway, got a kilkenny at Durian’s Harry’s before sending her back home to East coz she doesn’t want to give the guy an excuse to send her back. Oh well. Petrol wasted. Hahaha…

Got a dinner tomorrow with my salsa friends. Oh yeah still got a wedding dinner at Sentosa on Friday. Hmm…

Week 1

Same as usual.

Only event worth mentioning was my company’s DnD at Marina Mandarin on Thursday coz I suppose its cheaper. Kept to drinking wine the whole night and avoid mixing with beer. Not as good as the previous years but still acceptable. Gotten Eileen Wee as one of our MC. Ok lah, no complains. Typical games, singing performance and stuff.

No door gifts this time round but gotten my doodle drawn by an artist who was engaged by my company and also a handphone strap. Somehow my family says the doodle doesn’t really look like me. But I think its ok lah. Its free after all.

Oh yeah. Next Tuesday is Hari Raya Haji. Also got a wedding at Shangri-La's Rasa Sentosa on Friday the Thirteen. Maybe give $100 or $110 as angbao? Must check the market rate….

Looking at this whole week, the only that I’m really happy about is the posting of scans of the manga - Hajime no Ippo Volume 53-55. It makes my work time pass a lot easier. It’s a very long series on boxing which is very well received in Japan since I was, perhaps 14??. I like it a lot. Lots of action with positive messages.

With that I end this post with this quote from Volume 53 “

“Constant Effort is Life's Greatest Shortcut”

Recap of New Year’s Eve

Started spending the eve at Fong Seng with my NPCC friends but ended up at West Coast Mac Donald catching up. Incidentally we had a friend who’s birthday is on last day of the year, so its kind of like a yearly thingy to be this group of friends for the eve.

West Coast Mac Donald is not a bad place actually. Quite big, relaxed and comfortable. Come to think of it, if one can hold’s one’s wedding at a MacDonald? Maybe can have the justice of peace dressed up as uncle Donald??

Almost of my friends in gang are part of the Civil Service, ranging from Prison, Police, ICA, The Army, Air Force, MOE… think that’s about it…. Only a few of us are left in the private sector. Sigh… The shipping business had a good 2005, evidenced by the minimum bonus of 4 to 6 months… I’m in the wrong line liao lah… even Civil Service gets a total of 2.15 months.

Was talking cock before we realized 2006 has arrived. Hope everyone will have a better tomorrow. Anyway, most of the gang got sleepy around 0100hrs, so we broke up our chatting then.

Got home to find a Motorola earpiece lying on my bed, courtesy of my brother. Dunno where the hack he “stun” it from but who cares… Dunno how to sync the Bluetooth thingy yet. Need to get to a computer to find out from the net. Probably will dump in my car since it will be the only place that I will ever need to use it.

First post of 2006

Will start the first post of 2006 with this quote from Grey’s Anatomy Episode 2.

“Boundaries don’t just keep out others, they also keep you in. Take a risk by looking from the other side and you might just find a spectacular view there”

Oh. Here’s another one from The Classic which was shown some time ago.

“The course of true love never really runs smooth, but it will also never run dry.”
