Other Side of the Looking Glass

Saw this article from the blog Yawning Bread, titled "Keeping Singapore safe for families". Its interesting, in light of the massage parlour sleaze invading the heart land.

Personally I feel that the oldest "profession" in human history should have been eradicated by this time and age. But who am I kidding when the majority of the people, especially the weaker sex are living below their country's bench-mark poverty line.

I suppose, this being a supply and demand conundrum, both sides of the equation must share the blame, with my sex taking 60 % of it due to the way history turned out.

The solution to this problem is to break the supply and demand equation. Sounds simple but it is obviously not. The current directive of just catching everybody involved is only just treating the symptom but not the disease.

Broadly speaking, there are 3 main ways to eradicate this "profession".

Ensure Survival.

Women or men will do anything to ensure their own survival and that of their children. Naively and hopefully, i would like to think that, given a chance, no women would want to be associated with this industry. Sadly, not many destituted people have a choice.

Each government are supposedly there to serve their citizens and improve the lot of their nation. Sadly, not every government remembers this primary task when self interest overrides national interest.

Organised Crime.

This is actually the main driver of the whole industry. Majority of the girls are either duped or forced into this industry. Organised Crime provides the avenues for these transactions to occur. This in turn becomes linked to other crimes like drugs and human traffic smuggling.

All countries should try to eradicate organised crime as much as possible to prevent the exploitation of women. However organised crime is still in turn linked back to poverty.

Education.

Providing education for the women helps them to get a better life (hopefully) and also to know their options and rights so as to make the right decisions. Men must also be educated to reach into their conscience after acknowledging the pitiful plight of the women servicing their needs.

Of course, this is only my simple and humble opinion. Whether things will really work out the way it is supposed to do, we will never know.

After all, how many people are there that really cares for the world and humanity. Can poverty ever be minimized or removed?

3 Questions.

In the history of men, even in the future, there are 3 burning questions that all mortal men will ask in some point of their life.
  1. What is the meaning of life? / Is there a God etc tec.
  2. What is in my future ? / How and when will i die ? etc etc
  3. What is the opposite sex thinking ? / What do they want ?

The first question depends on the individual or whether there is a God.

The 2nd question cannot be answered unless you have a Delorean with a flux capacitor.

Now, the last question, when compared to the first 2, seems like a no-brainer on first look. But it has, too, left many philosophers, sages and ordinary mortal men bewildered since they first know about the opposite sex.

Personally speaking, i'll rather not know the answer to the 3rd question. Coz if i did, relationships would no longer be fun anymore. ha ha ha...

International Whaling Commission 2006

AFP - Japan will leave annual global whaling talks after landing its heaviest ever blows against a 20-year moratorium on commercial whale hunts.

Environmentalists and anti-whaling states entered the five days of annual talks in the Caribbean worried that Tokyo would finally wrest control of the International Whaling Commission (IWC).
Their fears have been at least partially realized, and they are styling Japan's advances and the expanding pro-whaling bloc in the body as a "wake-up call" for their never-ending battle to save whales.

In a sign of the stepped up anti-whaling campaign that activists have promised, iconic group Greenpeace staged a beach landing protest in the final hours of the IWC talks, leading to the arrest of 10 of its members.

Four protestors waded ashore through clear blue waters from high-speed launches after leaving the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise, waving banners in the shape of a whale fin bearing the slogan "R.I.P."

They were joined by another six Greenpeace activists already on the beach of the luxury resort hosting the talks.

Protestors were restrained with plastic cuffs and led away by St Kitts police officers.

"As far as we are aware they have entered the federation without the consent of an immigration officer," said St Kitts and Nevis police chief Robert Jeffers, adding that the protestors would be charged with infringing immigration laws, obstructing a police officer and resisting arrest.

Japan's pro-whaling coalition slumped to defeat in a string of early votes at the meeting, including on crucial issues like Japan's desire for secret ballots to be introduced to IWC meetings.

But the anti-whaling states couldn't hold the line, and 33 pro-whaling states Sunday mustered their first majority in more than two decades, by one vote, on a highly symbolic resolution on the future direction of the body.

Tokyo immediately set a controversial course for a return to commercial whaling, welcoming 37 IWC members to a special meeting to discuss reform plans.

The focus of Monday's session -- outside IWC auspices -- was restoring what Japan sees as the body's original 1946 mandate -- regulating sustainable hunting.

"We are not trying to exclude, or separate, or divide this organisation," said Joji Morishita,
Japan's IWC alternate commissioner, at the talks in a dimly lit nightclub in the resort.

Japan called the meeting to discuss a date and venue for three days of formal talks -- outside the IWC and before its next annual meeting in Alaska -- for nations that support its reform drive, a process Tokyo calls "normalization."

Environmental groups accused Japan of trying to take the IWC back 60 years, arguing that its thrust for commercial whaling had no place in the modern world.

"Regardless of the rhetoric and posturing here, very little has been achieved, either for whales or people this week," said Susan Lieberman, director of WWF's global species program. Environmentalists, who believe Japan wants to stifle conservation efforts on the commission, slaughter more whales and chip away at the moratorium.

However, the moratorium, enforced in 1986 as one of the environmental movement's proudest achievements, is not in immediate danger, as it needs a currently unobtainable 75 percent majority to be overturned.

Japan abides by the moratorium, but conducts some "research" whaling through what opponents say is a loophole in the IWC charter, as does Iceland.

Norway ignores the moratorium all together. Around 2,000 whales are taken a year by the three nations. - Reproduced from Yahoo, 21st June 2006.

This news on whaling caught my attention.

Initially, my first thought was no to whaling on all levels. Primary its because I thought whales are actually endangered species. But on 2nd thought, I remembered that I do not support vegetarianism and the banning of farming of livestock, i.e chickens, cows, pigs etc. So what is this all about ?

Went to IWC website but found it too incomprehensible with all the big words and stuff. So I tried Wikipedia which is more helpful to understanding the whole issue.

This Blog by David, a New Zealander living in Tokyo, who actually covers this whole issue in depth. He had also set up this page to answer the 3 most asked question about whaling. Though his blog is slightly towards pro-whaling but it still can be read to know gain some insight into the pro-whaling camp.

Basically, there are the pro-whaling camp (like Japan) and Anti-whaling camp which make up the IWC. “The IWC remains a deeply polarised body, with little compromise possible between two entrenched positions; one that regards whales as a food resource like any other, and the other that sees them as special, sentient creatures which should never again be hunted.” (quoted from BBC) The IWC is actually voluntary and members can opt out of a resolution, delay implementation of the agreement or leave the IWC totally if they want to, which basically also meant that the IWC has no teeth.

In 1986, a moratorium was passed by the then-members to adopt a global ban on commeical whaling but allows for a loop hole through scientific whaling, which meant that whales that are killed for scientific studies can be sold commercially as it would be a waste otherwise. There is also an exception made for aboriginal subsistence whaling where the IWC consider it to be of a different nature to commercial whaling due to cultural and subsistence issue.

All was well and good for a while, with both camps trying to pull votes every year.

That is until this year. Japan, being the leader of the Pro-whaling camp, got enough votes to start looking for ways to reverse the 1986 moratorium but not enough to repeal it totally this year.

Now that the population of Whales has stabilized (if its really true), i suppose there is no reason not to support the idea of sustainable whaling. But the issue of actual implementation and enforcement, formulation of quotas and accurate accounting of the actual stock left would make this a slippery slope that might accidentally result in their extinction. As long as the IWC can agree on reasonable measures, i guess its all right.

Might as well everyone be dammned together, i say, if this can't be stopped.

Personally its a no for me because i don't trust people generally but logically its just another thing altogether.

Guess i did watch too much TV in my growing years. Luckily, most of the shows were shown late at night on weekdays, so they didn't interfere much with my studies. ha ha ha...

The only lasting effect was, perhaps, i had become more cynical of life on the whole and also become psychologically too old before my time. When one is exposed too much and too soon, i guess there is really no helping it. Most of the shows are mainly american productions (also kind of pro-family, which is slightly different from our chinese pro-family ways), which would explain why i was more americanised in my outlook than my more traditionally minded peers whom were more into chinese pop, local chinese dramas and stuff during the same period. Yeah... i was a bit extreme in my thinking and actions when i was younger... heh heh. Not that i regret now lah... heh heh...

i think i am more moderate now bah... ?

*(didn't comment on the newer shows coz anyone that watches tv should know about them)

Legacy

Birth

Today (19/6) is Garfield's birthday. Apparently he was "born" in 1978. Been reading Jim Davis's work since i first flipped open the Newspaper. Wouldn't actually say that i'm a fan but it has been there whenever i was bored, like Dilbert.

There's another old comic strip that i actually liked more than Garfield, its titled Heathcliff. Heathcliff is drawn less cute than Garfield but is more fun loving and mischievous than Garfield. Even though the physical similarities are obvious, Heathcliff actually pre-dates Garfield.

Garfield & Gang

Heathcliff & Gang

Death

Was about to meet 2 of my NS friends today but found out about the passing of the grandma of one. Will be going to the wake to pay respect, though i dun know the deceased. I guess its more of a friend thing.

Considering the above two information, it does help to put the matter of birth and death into perspective again.

One was an intangible concept created by a man person and his instruments. The other was a living person created from flesh by persons with love. Both left 2 different types of legacies on our world.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are probably millions more people or ideas out there that barely make a scratch on this world before being sniffed out of existence. What about this group then ? Is their existence so worthless or of no meaning in the eyes of the pragmatic ? I would like to think not.

Actually no one has the right to value other people’s life, coz life can have no value attached to it and there is no comparison. I’m not saying that life has a purpose. But in a zillion years, does it all matter?

Living for no purpose and dying for no purpose. The carefree life. Think about the possibilities...

A difference

Read an article on Saturday regarding Mikhail Gorbachev, the man who ended the Cold War.

In it, he quoted a saying attributed to JFK which goes like this :

" One man can make a difference. Every man should try. "

Have you tried ? Even a minor one ? Mikhail Gorbachev did.

Thinking

These days, i'm always thinking of someone. Once every few hours, sometimes just once a day.

I'm not sure if its because, sub-consciously, I just wanted to think of someone or is it that the someone is naturally just in my thoughts.

Still, the fact is that I do think of someone, and felt compelled to call which I never did. Which leads me to think that maybe i'm just having a on-off fancy or I just want anyone who's available. I was contemplating to wait it out to see if this will go away. But how do you decide how long to actually sit it out.

I used to have the thinking that out of the billions of people in the world, if you are lucky to have the feelings for someone, one should just go for it even if you don't know the outcome. After a long period of peaceful solitude, i'm not so sure now...

Maybe i'm scare of rejection. Of being unable to give happiness. Of obligations. Of causing suffering. Of eventual partings and the lost of a friend and friends. In another way, I'm also scared of actually succeding. Of actual happiness. Kaoz. I'm acutally quite CMI.

Enticing someone to your door and actual letting someone into your door are scary stuffs. So what to do ?

But the horrible thing is that I do know.

Still, think that I should have ignored myself.

We'll see...

S. Korea Vs Toga

Tuesday. Met up with Lips, Cam, Daniel, Ter, Yong, Joyc and Albert in Orchard for dinner before proceeding to watch soccer around Alley Bar pub for the S.Korea Vs Toga.

We had side bet to predict the score. At that time, it was Toga 1-0. So Lips and I predicted Toga 2-0. Albert and Joyc went for 1-1. The rest went for S.Korea 2-1.

On the whole, so far, I feel that S.Korea is better than Japan, who, miserably, lost 3-1 to Aust. On the whole Asian still cannot match neither the Europeans nor the Africans in terms of stamina. Saw most of them puffing away during the last few minutes really

With the entry of African countries in this world cup, I was quite impressed with their aggressive play and stamina. Although the lack of experience shows in their game, it might be only a matter of time before they dominate the future games.

The African teams have also helped the bookies make a killing till now. Wonder if they will continue to upset the odds... oh well... bookies always win.

World Cup 2006

The opening match for Germany sets my expectation for the this time round.

But the performace of England and Sweden leaves much to be desired.

The new African Countries seems to be putting up a valiant performance despite their inexperience.

Who will take the ultimate trophy ? Only time will tell.

Criminal Minds - Debut

Quote of the Day :

Joseph Conrad said, "The belief in a supernatural source of evil is not necessary. Men alone are quite capable of every wickedness."

An exciting show but not so sure if the show can substain itself... Need to see where and how it goes.

我爷爷跟他来翻脸,惨被他一棍来打扁;
我奶奶骂他欺善民,反被他捉进了唐府强奸一百遍,一百遍;

Geek In The Pink by Jason Mraz

Lyrics :

Yo, Brotha A to z,
Yo, wussup B,
Yo, What time is it?

Ha-ha, It's laundry day!

(do do do...)

Well let the geek in the pink take a stab at it
If you like the way I'm thinkin' baby wink at it
I may be skinny at times but I'm fat fulla rhymes
Pass me the mic and I'm a grab at it
Isn't it delicious crazy way that I'm kissin'
This baby listen to this don't wanna miss it while it's hittin'
Sometimes you gotta fit in to get in
But don't ever quit cause soon I'm gonna let you in but see

I don't care what you might think about me
You'll get by without me if you want
Well,I could be the one to take you home
Baby we could rock the night alone
If we never get down it wouldn't be a let down
But sugar don't forget what you already know
I could be the one to turn you on
We could be the talk across the town
Don't judge it by the color, confuse it for another
You might regret what you let slip away

Like the geek in the pink (do do do...)
Like the geek in the pink, yeah (do do do...)
The geek in the pink

Well my relationship fodder don't mean to bother nobody
But Cupid's automatic musta fired multiple shots at her
Because she fall in love too often that's what the matter
At least I'm talkin' about it keep a pattern of flattery and
She was starin' through the doorframe, and
Eyeing me down like already a bad boyfriend
Well she can get her toys outta the drawer then
Cause I ain't comin' home I don't need that attention, see

I don't care what she might think about me
She'll get by without me if she wants
Well, I could be the one to take her home
Baby we could rock the night alone
If we never get down it wouldn't be a let down
But sugar don't forgetin' what you already know
That I could be the one to turn you out
We could be the talk across the town
Don't judge it by the color, confuse it for another
You might regret what you let slip away

Hey baby look at me go
From zero to hero
You better take it from a geek like me
Well I can save you from unoriginal dum-dums
Who wouldn't care if you com...plete him or not

So what I've got a short attention span
A coke in my hand
Because I'd rather have the afternoon, relaxin' understand
My hip hop and flip-flops well it don't stop with the light rock
My shot to mock you kinda puts me in the tight spot
The hype is nothing more than hoo-ha so I'm
Developing a language and I'm callin' it my own
So take a peek into the speaker and you'll see what I mean
That on the other side the grass is greener

I don't care what you might think about me
You'll get by without me if you want
I could be the one to take you home
Baby we could rock the night alone
If we never get down it wouldn't be a let down
But sugar don't forgetin' what you already know
I could be the one to turn you out
We could be the talk across the town
Don't judge it by the color, confuse it for another
You might regret what you let slip away
like the geek in the pink (do do do...)
I'm the geek in the pink ya'll
geek is the color for fall
I'm the geek in the pink
so i'm the geek ya'll
in the pink ya'll
geek is the color for fall
i'm the geek in the pink

Bad Day by Daniel Powter

Lyrics :

Where is the moment we needed the most
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost
They tell me your blue skies fade to grey
They tell me your passion's gone away
And I don't need no carryin' on

You stand in the line just to hit a new low
You're faking a smile with the coffee to go
You tell me your life's been way off line
You're falling to pieces everytime
And I don't need no carryin' on

Cause you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day
You had a bad day

Well you need a blue sky holiday
The point is they laugh at what you say
And I don't need no carryin' on

You had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day

(Oh.. Holiday..)

Sometimes the system goes on the blink
And the whole thing turns out wrong
You might not make it back and you know
That you could be well oh that strong
And I'm not wrong

So where is the passion when you need it the most
Oh you and I
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost

Cause you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
You've seen what you like
And how does it feel for one more time
You had a bad day
You had a bad day

Had a bad day
Had a bad day
Had a bad day
Had a bad day
Had a bad day
