祖母的忌日 no. 3

Suddenly remember its my grandma's anniversary today.

Two years today at around 2+ am. In my kitchen.

Not particularly close to her coz i would only see her every CNY, not withstanding our communication gap.

How long would it take for me to forget what she look like? and about this day?

In a way, i'm glad she did died in my kitchen coz at least i was around when the candle snuffed. It's kind of funny, but at that point in time, i was watching a jap drama on ambulance drivers and their colleagues if a hospital.

As such, i'm going out tonight to have a great time. Partly because that's prob what she would want for me also.

The other part... well, it can be best explained in this story :

When Zhuang Zi's wife died and Hui Shi came to convey his condolences, he found Zhuang Zi squatting with his knees out, drumming on a pan and singing ''You lived with her she raised your children, and you grew old together", Hui Shi said "Not weeping when she died would have been bad enough. Aren't you going too far by drumming on a pan and singing ?""No," Zhuang Zi said, "when she first died how could I have escaped feeling the loss? Then I looked back to the beginning before she had life Not only before she had life but before she had form. Not only before she had form, but before she had vital energy. In this confused amorphous realm, something changed and vital energy appeared,- when the vital energy was changed, form appeared; with changes in form, life began. Now there is another change bringing death This is like the progression of the four seasons of spring and fall, winter and summer. Here she was lying down to sleep in a huge room and I followed her sobbing and wailing. When I realized my actions showed I hadn't understood destiny, I stopped."
– Translations from the Sayings of Zhuang Zi (庄子), a Taoist Sage.

*Just a last thought. In this joke that we call Life, how many people are there, who have passed us by, that are almost as good as being dead to us now?

Met the Kwoks

Went down to their place to have dinner with them as they actually do live relatively near to my work place.

As such i'm now kind of privy to information at which i was requested to keep mum about.

But all will be revealed in near future.

Guess i have to start saving up.

Never to take public transport across the bridge.

Went across the Bridge on the last public holiday to accompany my cousin who wanted to do some shopping and maybe catch a movie.

Think I went in too late as I was stuck at the other custom for 2.5 hours along with probably hundreds of my fellow men/women.

Met this two type of irritating ppl while I was stuck there.

The first one being a man with his family. Nothing remarkable except that he was wearing this Singapore Police Sport shirt (with a big Singapore logo ) while trying to act like a on-duty policeman looking after the “situation” but is basically just trying to push his family forward to the front. Kanna smoked by him when I first started queuing up at a shorter queue which incidentally cut into his queue, as he asked the new arrivals and me to go behind him. But after observing that he was in slippers and realizing that the fact that Singapore Police has no jurisdiction on this side of the border, I joined the queue and cut ahead of him anyway.

The other irritating group of people to meet is the girl gang that insist on being together by holding hands to form a horizontal chain which cuts across a few queues. This meant that even if the any of the affected queue moves ahead, the people behind cannot move ahead as they are stopped behind those hand-holding girls while people from the adjacent queue would cut into the faster moving line. Sigh… Tried to squeeze past them from the left but the left-most girl refuses to budge after a few minutes. After I gave up, she commented to her friend on the right about “leaving a gap for people to breathe”, which might have been meant for me. Wanted to ask her to take a shuttle to outer space if she really need “space” when every where in the custom hall everyone is packed like a sardine can.

Witnessed 3 men and 1 woman fainted in the other queues. Also heard the roar of frustration when certain pockets of “queuers” let loose their thoughts verbally when there was no progress in the queue.

Eventually squeezed out of the custom area to meet my cousin who had already spent all of her cash. Win.

Ate some sushi, took up a new hair style, saw MI3 and bought myself a jacket.

Touch down on home soil around 10+. Could have been earlier if we weren’t so adventurous to walk back across the bridge. And no, there wasn’t a jam on the bridge.

Lesson learnt – Rather be stuck in the great jam in my car than with hundreds of frustrated and sweaty human beings. Though the environmental impact ….

The empty bridge at 2141hrs.

A Lesson from Fairytales 4

For quite a while now, at the teahouse, as a wise man sat at his favourite table sipping the sweet brew of the afternoon, a cheeky brat would pass and knock down his turban.

This happened again and again but as angry as he must have been, the wise man didn't say a thing.

The baker even asked him "How can you allow this impertinence? Why don't you stand up and teach him a lesson?"

"Teach him?" said the wise man. "My scolding could make him more cautious so that later he may do more harm. As I dislike him, quite a lot, I will rather let his impertinence grow every day. I will take the advice of the prophet Issa and turn to him the other cheek. If I keep sipping my own tea, Allah will teach him."

And so, the shameless jest went on for months.

One day, a cold-eyed soldier from the army was sitting at the wise man's usual place. The wicked boy, by force of habit, ran by and knocked down his turban. The soldier swung up with his sword and before thinking cut the boy's head off.

"A wise man must be a fool indeed to teach lessons to his own enemy."

Paradise Now.

3 Different Posters.

The Arab-Israel issue has too much historic and social baggage that makes the whole issue very sad. Being said... seeing this movie is a good way to help put the conflict in a slightly better perspective since we are too unfamiliar with their culture and situation.

But where is Paradise?

Pygmalion effect

After reading this Wikipedia Article on this psychological self-fulfilling effect, if its really true...

One has to wonder : Does our School Streaming System has this effect on our children?

Children, being young, are highly impressionable... easily impressed by the media and adults.

Poor kids...

Once in 5 years

Random Thoughts...

06/05/06 – Election Day.

PAP formed the gov’t without fail.

Too bad about Aljunied GRC. Malay votes lost due to lack of minority candidate?

PAP: 74,810 (56.08%)
WP: 58,585 (43.92%)
Void: 2,381

Suspicion about the anonymity of voting, “weird” electorate boundaries are still deep rooted in the community.

Gomez kenna stopped from leaving S’pore to go for his work at the airport. WP Chairman helping with “investigations”. Will this affect her likely NCMP nomination?

Small Lee looked tired on TV especially that late night, maybe due to being past bed time and also worries/stress?

All in all, I’m not entirely sure of the statement “Majority of post-85ers support the incumbent”. How do they really know? Polls? 感觉?

How will it be in 5 years time? Will i ever get to vote again?

How far will the CSJ family saga and SDP CC defamation suit play out? Will they ever gain legitimacy in politics? Interestingly, there's a very cute photo of him at Wikipedia, which does make one wonder : Who is CSJ and how is he as a real person when you strip away all the publicity by the local media? Would i ever get to see the local production Singapore Rebel by Martyn See? ;)

Wedding Bells for DY

Took leave today to help our beloved DY for his wedding as his "brothers" entourage. Involved along were Lips, Daniel and Ronnie and two of DY's friends, Kellan and Sam. Drove to his place in the East in the morning before proceeding to kick start the day with the gate-crashing.

The day proceeded smoothly even though the rain interfered slightly.

All in all, the day-ceremonies and the dinner at Regent went off without a hitch.

Congrat's to the new couple.

And may today be the start of the best days of their lives together.

The Couple.

White House Correspondents'. Association Annual Dinner 2006

Saw this clip showing George Bush and Steve Bridges at the White House Correspondents'. Association annual dinner. Laughed my socks off.

Got to admire this man who has the guts and the openness to carry this off. Or either it was very well thought out by his people. I dunno. Still, for a President of the most powerful nation to do this… says something about that man, bearing in mind of all the shit that had been thrown at him by his countrymen and the world press.

His critics, of course, lambasted him for making fun of the Presidency when the Country’s image is much battered around the world, even as they laughed at his skit. But then, they are already biased in their opinion.

Don’t think I can even imagine any other world leaders carrying this out or even carrying it off. Most would probably want to maintain their façade of dignity

You certainly need a certain indefinable charisma and guts to be a free world leader, even more so when the whole world is against you, either rightly or wrongly.

Who knows how he will go down in the history books. That is for our future generations to decide because by then, they would have more information to decide on.
